Gypsum was mined in the Thuringian Forest in Kittelsthal near the town of Ruhla, amongst other quarries. The gypsum burning kiln at the quarry is a technical monument and witness of the mining period. It is also part of the GeoRoute 11 „Thuringian Raw Materials Trail“ at the UNESCO Global Geopark Thuringia Inselsberg – Drei Gleichen. For this reason and to stop its dilapidation it became restored in 2019 and 2020. An information board close by holds information about the quarry and use of the kiln.
The restoration was funded by the Free State of Thuringia and the town of Ruhla.
