S.O.S. Green Heart. Our changing nature

Gotha, Ducal Museum

The signs of change are omnipresent: heatwaves, droughts, forest fires, floods – we all feel the changes in our environment. More and more people are getting involved, taking to the streets and looking for ways to adapt their habits. But what can we actually do?

An important factor for the noticeable changes of our time is the advancing climate change, the main cause of which is the high emission of CO2 (carbon dioxide). But land use, industrialisation, urban development and other human activities also have an impact on nature.

The exhibition "S.O.S. Green Heart. Our changing nature", which the Friedenstein Foundation Gotha is presenting from 28 April to 27 October 2024, takes visitors on a journey through the changes to our local landscapes and ecosystems. Using examples from the local area around Gotha, it shows how human activities are causing serious problems in nature. Industrialised landscapes, the increase in monocultures in agriculture and forestry, the straightening and canalisation of many watercourses - all of this has not only ecological, but also social and economic consequences. Special attention is paid to the increasing extinction of species as a result of these changes.

The exhibition not only shows rare and endangered species, but also sheds light on immigrant species that threaten our ecosystem. Nature conservation and species protection are discussed as important instruments, but the limits and prospects of these measures are also highlighted. Visitors are invited to rethink their idea of "nature" and to engage with the challenges of nature conservation.

The exhibition concludes with scenarios for the future: What happens next and what can we do to prevent the worst from happening? The aim of the exhibition is to appeal to a wide audience and be interesting for all age groups through a variety of educational approaches.

The broad programme accompanying the exhibition includes the photo competition "Trees, streams, concrete deserts - our nature today".
Interested parties aged 18 and over are invited to take photographs of a global topic on a regional level. How is nature in Thuringia changing?
