Inselsberg Exhibition

“Summit Meeting of Flora, Fauna and Fossils – The Inselsberg Exhibition with a View”

The animated and inanimate nature of the Grosser Inselsberg, the most striking mountain of the western Thuringian Forest and a magnet for nature tourism, is the topic of a modern exhibition in the historic observation tower.

The theme of the GeoInfocentre focusses on the Rotliegend rocks (presented as so-called "talking rocks"), spectacular fossils from a nearby operational quarry in Bad Tabarz (incl. the 290 million years old fossil Giant Mayfly Syntonopteroidea with a wing span of over 20 cm –  presented here as a life reconstruction), surveying topics (Large Triangle according to Gauss) as well as a geological model of a profile through the Thuringian Forest highlighting important geotopes.

The tourist information is located on the groundfloor. The top floor has been converted into a viewing platform with panorama windows from where you can enjoy spectacular views over the Thuringian Forest and to the neighbouring low mountain range Rhön. When the weather is good you may even see the Brocken in the Harz Mountains!
