Exhibition opening at the Mühlburg

Drei Gleichen OT Mühlberg

"From quarry to keep - the Mühlburg and its history rich in stone": the history of the Seeberg sandstone is presented in a new exhibition in the Mühlburg to touch. The exhibition is especially - but not only - for families and little explorers can slip into the role of a geologist or knight, do a 3D puzzle of the Mühlburg, but above all learn about the geology of the region.

The Seeberg sandstone comes from the nearby quarry on the Großer Seeberg, about 6 km northwest of the Mühlburg. Traces of this sandstone - whether as building stone or decorative element - can be traced throughout Germany and there are indications that it was also used abroad, for example in Gdansk. Many buildings, however, were affected by the world wars and no longer stand today. But the Erfurt Cathedral and the Gotha Ducal Museum, along with the Mühlburg, are examples where Seeberg sandstone can still be admired today.

Next year, the lower floor of the Mühlburg will be redesigned on the theme of clay and claystone.
