On a sunny Monday, 3 July 2023, an exciting project day took place at the Tabarz Volcano Trail (GeoRoute 8), where pupils of the Gymnasium Ernestinum in Gotha were able to explore the fascinating world of regional geology.

The day began with an informative introduction to the geology of the area and the formation of the impressive volcanic landscape. Afterwards, the young explorers set off to explore the surrounding flora and fauna and marvel at the unique geological formations of the volcanic slope. In the process, they could not only admire impressive rock formations, but also encounter rare plants and animals.

A highlight of the day was undoubtedly the visit to the Backofenloch, which gave the pupils the opportunity to explore a cave in the volcanic rock. The expert Geopark geologist Stephan Brauner vividly explained the volcanic processes that once formed these majestic formations and patiently answered the young participants' curious questions.

After an exciting hike and lots of information, everyone gathered back at the starting point, where a volcanic eruption was then experimentally recreated using baking soda and washing-up liquid.

A big thank you goes to the Geopark geologist Stephan Brauner who made the day an unforgettable experience for all participants, as well as to the organisers and helpers who made this project day at the Tabarzer Vulkansteig possible.

We hope that more exciting events will follow and that the enthusiasm for nature and its secrets will continue to grow among the young participants.
