On 18 May 2022, the tourist information office in the Kulturscheune Mühlberg received a call from Pastor Matthias Müller – he would be coming over shortly with a Brazilian scientist.

Shortly afterwards, Matthias Müller and Marcelo Vieira Nascimento (geographer and botanist, author and scientific coordinator) entered the Kulturscheune. Mr Nascimento is writing a book on behalf of the city of Florianopolis in Brazil about one of its most important inhabitants:

Johann Friedrich Theodor, known as "Fritz", Müller (1822-1897)

To this end, Mr Nascimento travelled to all the important places in Fritz Müller's life in Germany and so his path also led him to Mühlberg.

After discovering the information boards about the Müller pastor's family in the passageway to the cemetery, an attentive woman from Mühlberg accompanied him to Pastor Matthias Müller. He gave him an insight into the church records. Wolfgang Schröter, who is very familiar with the Müller brothers, including Hermann Müller (1829-1883) and Wilhelm Müller (1857-1940), was also consulted.

After Mr Nascimento had visited and documented the small exhibition on the second floor of the Kulturscheune about the two gifted naturalists and early Darwinists, he was accompanied to the Mühlburg by Mr Schröter. We were very happy to fulfil his request for historical photographs of Mühlberg. Although we had communication difficulties at first, as Mr Nascimento only spoke Portuguese, this was no problem thanks to his mobile phone and translation app.

It is remarkable how well known Fritz Müller still is in faraway Brazil and how important he is to the city of Florianopolis.

The small exhibition, incidentally the only permanent exhibition in the whole of Germany about the Müller brothers, can be visited during the opening hours of the tourist information centre in the Kulturscheune Mühlberg from Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.
