The Ries National Geopark has been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark, making it the 8th UGGp in Germany. Geopark Ries is the only meteorite impact crater among the now 177 UNESCO Global Geoparks worldwide and thus has a truly unique selling point. The managing director of Geopark Ries e. V., Heike Burkhardt, is overjoyed and very relieved about this decision in the second attempt: "The entire Geopark team has been working with full commitment, tirelessly and extremely motivated since 2016 to acquire this award with its high requirements for the Geopark. The joy is literally HUGE!"

On International Mother Earth Day, 21.04.2022, the official welcome ceremony of the Global Geopark Network, where all eight new UNESCO Global Geoparks are allowed to introduce themselves, will take place digitally. Via the Youtube link, anyone interested can watch the event live (14:00-16:00 o'clock) and also afterwards:
