Historic railway cutting Auwallenburg is passable again

It took a long time, but now it is done. The historic railway cutting in front of the Trusatal Auwallenburg is once again passable for hikers and cyclists. In August of this year, the old railway line, which is now part of the "Mommelsteinradweg" (Mommelstein Cycle Path), was cleared of woody vegetation and loose rocks, and the company "Berg und Bau" from Trusetal carried out mountain stabilisation measures on the abutment of the bridge. The managing director of the company, Michael Keilhold, emphasises that this is only the beginning and that further measures to secure the mountain will follow. Meanwhile, the municipality of Brotterode-Trusetal is very happy that the passage is safe again and that the Mommelstein cycle path can be continued in the Brotterode-Trusetal district in 2023.

The railway cutting also hides an important and highly impressive geotope that is now accessible again: the Auwallenburg Zechstein unconformity. A new information board explaining the geological situation has been completed and will soon again provide information about the geological feature on site. The experienced geologist Volker Morgenroth from Schmalkalden had the board made especially for this purpose and is pleased that the geotope can now be viewed up close again and reveal its "secrets".
